In continuation with last week’s wardrobe essential post, today I will be discussing the important tops and shirts to have in your cupboard. These are the fourteen basic styles and you could create various looks using them. I have suggested a product for each style and you could even buy something similar in your price point. Styling inspirations are given at the end of the post. Enjoy.
1. BLOCK COLOURED TEE
This is the most basic top style you will need. You could buy block coloured tees in various colours as per your choice. A heathered texture adds an additional element to the basic tee dressing it up a little. Go for a fitted or semi-fitted silhouette.
2. PRINTED T-SHIRT
The printed t-shirt is an universal favourite. You could wear them for a lazy evening in, to go shopping or even a casual brunch outing. There are tons of styles and brands to choose from. You could purchase a mid to lower priced product because we tend to get bored of them easily. Buy two-three each quarter for your wardrobe.
3. MONOCHROME STRIPE TOP
The black and white stripe top is a great choice for creating various looks. Wear it with a black blazer for a formal look or with shorts for a casual looks, you will be spoilt for choices. You could choose between different stripe widths, a top with half inch width stripes suits most body types.
4. ANIMAL PRINT TOP
An evergreen top, this one never goes out of fashion. Invest in a animal print top as it will last you over seasons. Buy one in a soft fabric like chiffon or poly-georgette and preferably with full sleeves. You could go for a leopard or snakeskin print.
5. FLORAL PRINT TOP
Add a feminine twist to your wardrobe. You could go for anything between a vintage floral print to a bright summer floral print. My personal choice is a black based floral printed top like the New Look top (mine is a Forever 21). Depending on your personal style you could buy one in a mid-range price or if you like changing your style often you could easily find one in a lower price range.
6. ETHNIC PRINT TOP
I think an ethnic print top is a must have in Indian wardrobes. It adds the ethnic touch to your look without having to go the whole way with a sari or suit. For the days you have to dress ethnic you go for a traditional colour palette or even opt for a off-beat scarf print top.
7. ABSTRACT PRINT TOP
Apart from the three generic print categories you should have one abstract print top. This could be anything from geometric prints to watercolour inspired prints. You could buy this either in a shirt form or a top form. A blue-black print like this Forever 21 top looks good both for formal and casual events.
8. BLACK SHIRT
The black shirt is an important part of a girl’s wardrobe. All of us have days when we don’t feel like dressing up, days we feel bloated and days we are lazy on- the solution is a comfort fit black shirt! Just put it on and if you want add an accessory. You could even buy one in cotton for the hotter months of the year. Invest in a good black shirt with a fit you love.
9. FORMAL BLUE STRIPED SHIRT
A good quality and well fitted formal shirt is a must in all wardrobes. Even if you are working for an industry that does not have a formal dress code buy a formal shirt, you could easily pair this down with jeans. Buy in a thicker fabric that is not translucent because double layer often adds to the discomfort.
10. CHECK SHIRT
There are various choices of check patterns to choose from- gingham, plaid, houndstooth and many more. A plaid check is forever in trend and a classic blue-white-red combination is the favourite choice. Buy from a good brand because you will be wearing this style for a long time.
11. DENIM SHIRT
The denim shirt has gained popularity over the last year for it’s versatility. You could wear a denim shirt as is or even as an overlayer. Choose a medium toned wash and classic design with less embellishments. Pair a denim shirt with your jeans or khakis for an old school charm.
12. CONTRAST DETAILS SHIRT
This is an easy update on a basic single coloured shirt. The contrast detailings in the placket, collar and cuff adds chicness to the outfit. You could choose from various contrast colour options apart from the monochrome colour palette.
13. PINTUCKED SELF-TIE BOW SHIRT
This style adds a soft touch to your ensemble. Purchase one in a pastel hue like this Forever 21 shirt for a more feminine look. Buy one in a soft fabric with neat stitching, a top with threads coming out at the pin tucks will not look good. You could pair this shirt style easily with jeans and with skirts.
14. SEQUIN TOP
The sequin top is an easy way to dress up for the evening out. Wear it with black trousers for a dinner date or for a night at the club pair it with a fitted skirt. You should choose between the versatile style of either a deep colour sequin top or a nude colour sequin top. Please check the quality of the fabric since most sequin tops have the embellishment falling out.
Taking inspiration from these street style ensembles pair a pastel peach shirt with white overalls for a casual chic look. A denim shirt can be paired with a straight cut below the knee length skirt with as much as ease as with jeans. Wear the black shirt with black trousers or black denims for a modish look. You could wear a snakeskin print top with a contrast stole for a windy day out. The basic tee gets an uplift by pairing it with a pin-striped trouser and blazer. A plaid shirt paired with palazzos adds character to the casual shirt.
You might have noticed that most of the tops and shirts are in the colour family of blue, black and white- these are the easiest to play with but feel free to buy some of the styles in a different colour too. Go for rich jewel tones or soft pastel hues as compared to sherbet colours which become too bright for most occasions. Hope this post helps you find you next favourite piece of clothing. Be smart and experiment! 🙂
P.S.: Sorry, I have had to change the post layout a few times. I am still trying to work my way through this.
