I will be doing a five part series on wardrobe essentials. These are evergreen clothing items that can be the base to create various looks. Along with product suggestion I will be posting 3 styling options in each post. This series will help build your basics in western clothing along with classic and experimental looks. Enjoy.
The first part of the series states the five bare minimum items you require to build your wardrobe on.
1. BLUE DENIM JEANS
The most essential item of clothing. You could buy a light or a deep shade of blue jeans but keep the wash and styling to a minimum. The most important factor to keep in mind is the FIT, go for a slim or straight fit depending on your body shape. Most of you already own a favourite pair of denims.
2. BLACK TROUSERS
A black semi formal trouser is the base for many work outfits and can easily be paired down for a casual look. Go for a mid-rise narrow fit trouser reaching just below your ankle. In the adjoining the picture the Mango trousers look short on the model but it is originally 40.5 inches in length which would reach just below the ankle on an average height girl, while picking a semi formal trouser be sure of the length because a short trouser will take away from the formal look.
3. WHITE SHIRT
A white button down shirt with narrow semi-spread collar is a classic. You could buy a fitted with concealed placket shirt like this Mango shirt or go for a standard placket with a slightly looser fit. Buy a comfort fit shirt and not too tight beacuse pulls at the chest or waist draws attention to your problem areas and takes away from the clean look.
4. BLACK TOP
The importance of a basic black top is downplayed on most wardrobe essentials list but this item is one chameleon. The short sleeves and slim fit makes it easier to layer it up with jackets or dress it up with statement jewellery. You can even play it casual by tucking it into palazzo trousers. Buy one without much detailing and with short sleeves.
5. BLACK FORMAL BLAZER
A well fitted jacket can deck up any attire. Go for a classic one button or two button with shoulder pads style. The fabric should be medium to heavy weight with a proper lining. Invest in a good branded one ans it will last you for almost ever.
Take inspiration from these street style photographs for your next ensemble pairing. Give your black tee a biker chic look and pair it with a faux leather jacket and monochrome skirt. For a evening look pair your blue denim and white shirt with a sequin trimmed jacket. Play down your semi formal black trousers with a slub knit tee and floral bomber jacket.
These classics will never go out of fashion, invest in them and buy from good brands like Mango or United Colors of Benetton which last over numerous washes. You could go budget friendly for the styling pieces and buy from fast fashion brands like Oxolloxo and Fab Alley. Be smart and experiment ! 🙂
